Commonly Asked Questions
What Is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy that helps children learn important life skills through positive, individualized teaching. Every child learns differently, so ABA focuses on understanding your child's unique strengths, interests, and needs to create a plan that supports meaningful growth.
ABA can help children develop skills such as communication, social interaction, play, emotional regulation, daily living skills, and independence. Therapy is designed to build on each child's successes while breaking larger goals into small, achievable steps.
At Bright Steps Northwest, we believe learning should be engaging, encouraging, and meaningful. We use play, positive reinforcement, and strong relationships to help children gain confidence and practice new skills that can be used at home, school, in the community, and throughout everyday life.
Most importantly, we partner closely with families because you know your child best. By working together, we can create goals that reflect your family's priorities and support lasting progress where it matters most.
What Does "Medically Necessary" Mean?
After your child's assessment, your Clinical Supervisor will recommend a treatment schedule based on your child's individual strengths, needs, and goals. This recommendation is considered medically necessary, meaning it reflects the amount of therapy needed to help your child make meaningful progress and meets your insurance provider's clinical guidelines for coverage.
Every child is different, which is why treatment recommendations vary from one child to another.
Why Does ABA Involve So Many Hours?
Unlike therapies that typically occur once a week, ABA focuses on helping children learn and practice new skills throughout everyday activities. Research has shown that children make the greatest progress when they have frequent opportunities to learn, practice, and apply new skills with consistent support.
While the recommended hours may seem surprising at first, they are designed to provide enough opportunities for meaningful learning, skill development, and long-term success.
What Does a Typical ABA Schedule Look Like?
At Bright Steps Northwest, treatment plans typically range from 10 to 40 hours per week, depending on your child's individual needs. Therapy is provided on a consistent weekly schedule, often with daily sessions, to promote routine, skill development, and steady progress.
We understand this can feel like a significant commitment, especially if your family is new to ABA. Our team will take the time to explain your child's recommended treatment plan, answer your questions, and work with you to develop a schedule that supports both your child's needs and your family's routine whenever possible.
